Bapaji and Me
"A journey of triumph and loss and how she used her grandfather’s teachings to overcome challenges of being a woman of Indian descent in the medical field."
Bapaji and Me: A Memoir of India and Beyond is a true story of grandfatherly love and the gifts of willpower, guidance, and resilience that he bestowed on everyone in his life. Told by his granddaughter, Dr. Sadhna Bhatia, this book shares the details of the author’s childhood in a small town in India and life in a multi-generational home.
Grandfather Bapaji continually emphasized the strength of character, generosity of spirit, and the importance of being in service to others—beliefs his family continues to practice to this day. Through his teachings and unwavering love, he also ingrained a spirit of determination into his granddaughter and encouraged her to pursue a noble and fulfilling career in Medicine.

In a culture that historically favors male children, Bapaji emphasized that being a female made his beloved granddaughter in no way inferior. He also reinforced the belief in all of his children and grandchildren that, by doing small deeds, one person can change the lives of thousands of people.
Supported by her grandfather, other grandparents, parents, uncles, and aunts, Dr. Bhatia shares her eight-decades-long journey of triumph and loss while also overcoming the many challenges that came with being a woman of Indian descent in the medical field.
Dr. Bhatia became a trailblazer when she became the first female, and the first foreign resident on staff, in a suburban Boston hospital in 1973. Despite needing to work exceptionally hard to gain approval, she was nonetheless elected chairperson of the Anesthesia Department, and worked in the field for forty years.
Even after his passing in 1956, Bapaji’s examples of fearlessness, kindness, and self-discipline continue to illuminate his family’s path. Knowing that her grandfather’s legacy could potentially change the lives of others, Dr. Bhatia has made it her mission to share his wisdom with readers across the globe. Within the pages of this beautiful non-fiction memoir, readers will see that, with hard work, passion, and the love and support of family, anything is possible.
